African Stone and Shona Art
African Stone Art

African Interior for Design for your Home or Office with our Unique Shona Sculpture Carvings

The Shona are Zimbabwe's largest ethnic group.  Stone carvings known internationally as "Shona Sculpture" - are from the Shona people being the predominant tribe in Zimbabwe, (although they are not the only tribe now crafting these sculptures), this remarkable art form has clarity, vitality and freedom,  The Shona as a people group are always admired for this art.

These Artists are greatly respect among the Shona and there are more paid artists then in most other people groups.  The Shona have produced some of the worlds most amazing art pieces and their artistic forms have been cited in numerous publications such as Newsweek and others as some of the most important art emerged from Africa during the 20th centry.

The Shona believe that spirits inhabit everything.  When an artist obtains a piece of wood or stone he does not trace what he want to carve, instead by looking at the shape of the stone figures out what the stone want to communicate.  To make their famous sculptures the Shone first chisel out stone from a quarry, carve it into figures which released the spirt of the stones, polish the sculpture with beeswax and sand, which bring the sculpture to life with its many colours in the stone.

The best quality stones used are serpentines, leopard rock and verdite, although others can be used.  Because the sculptures are hand carved, the pieces pictures will vary in colour, shape and size and even the artists vary from time to time. Their sculpture is a highly animistic and symbolic expression of folklore, customs and spirituality.  Choose from a wide selection of African Stone sculpture items, African art carvings, and other items to decorate your home with uniqueness.

You can buy here now at a lesser cost than those sold in retail shops.

Please note:  No two pieces are exactly alike- Items will vary from the picture shown but will follow the same context and story - we can send you a picture of your order prior to delivery - just leave a comment.
